National Police Dismantle Major Credit Card Cloning Network

The National Police have successfully dismantled a well-organized criminal group dedicated to the cloning and counterfeiting of credit cards. This network, operating with international reach, had attempted to defraud more than €5,000,000, with around €500,000 in confirmed fraudulent activity.

A Leader With a Notorious Past

The operation’s ringleader was reportedly arrested years earlier for financing the September 11 attacks in New York City using similar fraudulent techniques. His reappearance in the cybercrime scene demonstrates the persistent threat of digital fraud and organized financial crime.

How Did They Clone the Cards?

The organization relied on modern and complex methods:

  • Skimming: Illegally capturing credit card data from physical card readers.
  • Carding: Acquiring stolen card information from the Darknet to use or resell.
  • Software and Hardware Cloning: Using professional equipment to replicate magnetic stripe data.
  • Thermal Printing: Creating physical fake cards that mimic real credit cards.

Ongoing Fight Against Financial Crime

This investigation underscores the importance of cybersecurity and the need for constant vigilance by authorities and financial institutions. It also highlights the excellent work being done by our law enforcement agencies.
