Buying a safe online is convenient, but it’s one of the few purchases where a mistake is only discovered when it’s too late: the day of a break-in or a fire. A photo, a price tag, and the phrase “reinforced steel” don’t tell you how much protection a safe actually offers.
This guide follows the order in which it makes sense to decide: what you want to protect, what type of safe you need, what certification it should carry, which lock suits you, what size and anchoring you need, and who to buy it from. Step 1: Define what you want to protect, and from what
The first decision isn’t the model, it’s the risk. A safe designed to withstand a burglary isn’t automatically fireproof, and a fireproof safe doesn’t necessarily withstand an attack with tools.

Digital media tolerates far less heat and humidity than paper. That’s why a fireproof safe built for documents doesn’t necessarily protect a hard drive.
If the safe is meant to support a home or business insurance policy, ask your insurer in advance which grade they require. Some insurers limit content coverage based on the safe’s certification.
Step 2: Choose the type of safe
For homes and small businesses, the choice is usually between a surface-mounted safe and a concealment safe. Built-in wall and floor safes require construction work, and fireproof safes and gun safes answer a specific need.

Step 3: Demand certification, not adjectives
Steel thickness and the phrase “high security” on a product page aren’t a guarantee. What sets one safe apart from another is a European standard with a specific grade, tested by an independent body.

Before you buy, check three things: that the product page states the exact standard and grade, that a downloadable certificate exists, and that it was issued by an independent body such as ECB·S. If the seller doesn’t show it, ask. A genuinely certified safe has no reason to hide it.
Step 4: Choose the lock you’ll actually use
The lock is the part you touch every day, and the one most likely to fail through neglect: lost keys, dead batteries, forgotten codes. Choose the one that best fits how you’ll use it, not the flashiest option.

Whichever you choose, the lock is part of the certified assembly. A sophisticated lock on a safe with no recognized security grade doesn’t add protection.
Step 5: Size, weight, and anchoring
The most common mistake is looking at exterior dimensions instead of interior ones. Measure what you actually want to store (A4 folders, a laptop, jewelry boxes) and compare it with the usable interior space, not the safe’s overall size.
Beyond the measurements, check three things:
- Capacity margin. Safes fill up sooner than expected. Leave at least a third of the space free relative to what you’re storing today.
- Weight and access. A heavy safe is harder to steal, but also harder to move in. Check stairs, elevators, doorways and, for very heavy safes, how much load the floor can bear.
- Anchoring. A light, unanchored safe can be carried off whole by a thief. Fix it with the right anchors into concrete or solid masonry; a hollow partition wall won’t do.
If you’re not sure where or how to anchor it, ask before buying. Poor anchoring reduces the protection of an otherwise certified safe.
Step 6: Choose carefully who you buy from
With a safe, the seller matters almost as much as the product. Buying directly from the manufacturer gives you a reliable spec sheet, real technical answers, and after-sales service you can rely on ten years from now. On a marketplace, those three things usually depend on a third party that doesn’t know the product.
Before you pay, check:
- Who’s selling. Legal business name, tax ID, address, and a phone number that gets answered. Try calling it.
- A complete spec sheet. Standard, grade, interior dimensions, weight, and lock type. If any of these is missing, be wary.
- A downloadable certificate. It must correspond to the exact model you’re buying, not another one in the same range.
- Warranty and technical service. In Spain, new products carry a three-year legal warranty. Ask who repairs or opens the safe if the lock fails, and how quickly.
- Shipping. Delivery time, transport insurance, and whether unloading is included. Inspect the package before signing and note any damage.
- Installation. Make sure the safe will be properly installed by the seller.
- Returns. Distance selling lets you withdraw within 14 days, except for customized products. Confirm the conditions before buying.
On price: two similar-looking safes can cost very differently. The difference usually lies in the steel, the lock, the insulation, the certification testing, and the service behind it. A cheap safe that doesn’t protect is more expensive than one you buy once and that lasts a lifetime.
